What a Wild Spirit Brings: Chapter 48

Lyl is discovering two very important things- that lies are hard to keep up, and trust is a joy.
She has finally realized what having a true friend feels like, and finally understood that physical pleasure can be overshot just by good company in hard times. Someone who accepts you, believes in you, and is always there for you is hard to find and amongst the most wonderful things in the world to have.
Deceit, on the other hand, robs a friendship of closeness, and can even destroy what was a wonderful relationship.
Lyl has lost a friend through her dishonesty and gained one by being open. This has happened before, but this time, the lesson will hopefully, finally, sink in.

What a Wild Spirit Brings: Chapter 47

And so Lyl finally discusses some of her past with a person she has learned to trust; someone she admits gratefully to that she had not tried to force a friendship with, and yet, they are true friends. Lyl was worried that if someone saw her for the whole of what she was, that if she presented herself as being from a people she was ashamed of instead of an adopted people she was mostly proud to be part of, that others would reject her as readily as she had rejected her birthright.

But, a real friend is not so judgmental. A real friend takes the one thing you say out of paragraphs that shines as a resolvable regret, and helps you achieve what you had always felt you couldn't.

Lyl has also finally figured out that a lover and a friend can be very different people, and that just having physical interactions does not mean, no matter how enjoyable those interactions might be, that you will end up living together for the rest of your lives.

What a Wild Spirit Brings: Chapter 46

And so meeting her teacher outside the Wilder was a sad experience, the shame of her good fortune and secret keeping a burden she had to endure. Despite finding herself with two friends, Lyl is miserable, and not just because of her surroundings. One friend she mistreated in the past, and the other, she has currently misled.
Neither fully can trust her, and can she blame them?
All Lyl has now is a desperation to make it up to both of them, and the floundering that results from her blindness as to how.

What a Wild Spirit Brings: Chapter 45

Lyl has learned the value of being honest and open with a trustworthy friend, and how leaving gaps in knowledge can put a huge strain on a relationship where someone thought they knew you, and suddenly feel as if they do not. It is not only unfair to blindside someone in this way, but also, inhibiting, for their trust and confidence in you. Thankfully, Ginf is above hiding how she feels about Lyl's disregard in this matter, and the two can talk it out.

And thus, Lyl discovers the joy of a friend who is like-minded, and who is loyal, even when she doesn't deserve it. Most friends will come and go, when interests change or someone ceases a common activity. Perhaps one will get busy with things while the other doesn't, or someone has a new family member and the other feels alone and unneeded. Whatever the case, the extremely rare person who is there for you even after long absences and large offenses is someone to cherish. Never stop trying to be honest and close with them. You will miss them if you do.

What a Wild Spirit Brings: Chapter 44

Now that Lyl has finally matured enough to think of others, to follow through, even when it is difficult, and to be a woman of strong courage, she finally can cry. She can finally properly grieve her own losses, instead of giving compassion only for others. Her heart has opened enough to have compassion toward her own self.
And the reward she reaps for her growth and her perseverance is the satisfaction of her deepest desires, a realization of all she truly wanted the whole journey thus far.
Joy is all she knows for now. Joy and contentment; for it was rightfully earned and she left anything that might detract from her pleasure in the same arms that wrought it.

What a Wild Spirit Brings: Chapter 43

If Lyl's bravery ever could be said to have brought her something good, it would probably have to be said that it was luck.  Options appear when one is willing to try anything. People underestimate you, assuming you are like others your age, or of your stature, birthplace, or kind, so you end up impressing them, without having been anything but franticly trying to pursue your goal.

Courage is soldiering on when you are terrified, and if there is anything Lyl does well, it is this. It is not that she is actually the most talented or interesting person, as much as she does not limit her own effort based on her knowledge that she lacks knowledge. She never stops trying, no matter the seemingly impossible obstacles in front of her. Call it stubbornness. Call it luck. Call it bravery.

I call it what a wild spirit brings.

What a Wild Spirit Brings: Chapter 42

And once again, Lyl has acted foolishly based upon her own assumptions. She has walked boldly into a situation, riding the names and titles she knows, rather than understanding the people she has chosen.

And yet again, she has had to deal with the embarrassment and suffering caused by her rash behavior.

Lyl has had time with herself, which, though irritating and sad, she needed desperately. She has also had another opportunity to realize that she genuinely needs to spend time just learning for herself about her people.

There is a difference between confidence and blindness, and it is only a thin line. Will this finally sink in?

What a Wild Spirit Brings: Chapter 41

Lyl has yet again found herself oblivious about her chosen people, and their homeland. She also has, thankfully, finally met someone who could convince her that she should watch what she says.

She was brave enough to meet new people, and is no longer lost, but now, she must focus on her chosen task, and also wonder about the greatness of her mother, and yet more hints at something important about her brother...

My book, my copywrite :)

What a Wild Spirit Brings: Chapter 40

Lyl has discovered that it is one thing to state a horrible fate for a criminal, and quite another to be the one to dish out the punishment.

She has also come to terms with the fact that even kind gifts, if not understood, can make people fear you. In fact, in general, people are afraid of anything they do not understand, without regard for whether or not it benefits them. There are times that this means you can only do so much for someone...

Lyl also has finally realized that, though hard things have happened in her life, she has not had it worst in the world. No matter what horrible thing has happened to you, someone has always had it worse. Always.

And no one has had a perfect life. It may be something different, something you would not even find traumatic, but everyone has had a terrible time in their life, events that made them re-evaluate their purpose and worth. No one escapes testing and trials, and it is not a competition to see who gets to be the biggest victim and justify their crying, so much as a proof of who can withstand the torture and keep going forward, producing good as they go. Life's struggles are not meant to be excuses, but steps to a higher plane of opportunity and growth.

Lyl took her own negative experiences and used that knowledge to help someone in the present. Instead of letting horror from the past dominate her entirely, she found a way to allow it to propel her into kindness.

Bad things happen to everyone, and when they do, they do not entitle you to kindness and giving, but should enable you to give and to be compassionate.

It took Lyl, and myself, a long time to understand that.

What a Wild Spirit Brings: Chapter 39

Lyl has finally reached the worst place in the world. It has required her utmost effort, and could cost her everything, but she is finally there, and finally able to remedy her mistake.
It is a pity the only way for her to apologize is by risking her life to destroy what is left of his, but an apology was demanded, and the apology has been given.
Now, how can she survive the aftermath of such grueling struggle? How can she rescue herself from her own redemption?
Ingenuity. Creativity. Sheer will.

What a Wild Spirit Brings: Chapter 38

Lyl is going through something miserable, and she doesn't even feel the right to complain about her own discomfort due to guilt. She has realized this might kill her. She has come to terms with the agony of it all, remaining thoughtless, not only from weariness, but also, from the haunting knowledge that she deserves it...

And the torture all ends at the worst place in the world.

What a Wild Spirit Brings: Chapter 37

Lyl is struggling with physical strain, with mental torture, and emotional distraught. A sense of duty alone keeps panic at bay, and forces her on, though she'd rather stop.

She would rather stop and never leave. She'd rather stop before the barge, before the home of her friend, and she keeps going on, knowing that she will be miserable the further she goes.

Some things are absolutely unpleasant, but must be done. Some things will weary you to your bones, to your soul, and exhaust your very mind of thought, yet you soldier on, and though your plod slows, you never cease until you finish what you must.

Lyl is driven now, where before she would not listen, now she has seen the error of her procrastination. Guilt is a harsh taskmaster.

Lyl has learned what many teenagers do not learn until they are adults; that listening might have saved them much grief and hardship. But then, Lyl has always been young and foolhardy... (just like I was at her age).

What a Wild Spirit Brings: Chapter 36

Lyl has reconciled with her only sibling, and finally can settle into the everyday routine at the mountain, content with the peaceful way they live. She is ready to remain, watching over her new family, but she finally comprehends the danger her friend is causing with his madness. Her heart breaks for her friend, and for having to leave her family, but she finally is starting to do things for unselfish reasons, and must do what needs doing.

Lyl is growing up.

What a Wild Spirit Brings: Chapter 35

Family. We might fight with them sometimes, and we often disagree, but nothing makes a person feel at home quite like it, and Lyl needed a home.

No battle in one's own heart. Peace. Contentment.

Lyl is realizing this is a place capable of it, and that all her confusion is because she hasn't had enough experience with kindness, with family, with acceptance and love, to know what to do. But though it is foreign to her to be around these tender, happy people, she yearns to be apart of it somehow.

She is torn between having a real excuse she could use to run away, and desperation to belong with this family.

My book, my copywrite :)

What a Wild Spirit Brings: Chapter 34

Lyl has come to terms with the difference between unpleasant laws that are a mere means of control, and ones that are truly necessary for society to remain peaceable. Some things, are gruesome, but needed, to maintain a people. Some things are even terrible, but without them, there would be only suffering, and no one would be kind to anyone.

There are most certainly laws that are terrible, that seem to have no foundation, and laws, like everything, have two sides to their two sides, but even someone small can decide a law shouldn't be, and petition to find a way to instill change. If that law is genuinely harmful without purpose or provision, then others would see reason, and perhaps even join the disbanding of it.

You do not have to be a world leader or a politician to create change in a country or the earth. You just have to be utterly resolved.

What a Wild Spirit Brings: Chapter 33

When you have been through some trials in life, and start letting them overwhelm you, it ages your face, drawing lines on your skin, engraving each worry that it remains embedded in you. People can see what kind of life you have had, just looking at you, and respond in a first impression to the residuals of hardship they see as much as anything you say.

Your tone resonates in them, and some feel compassion, some look down, judging you for not being stronger, but a rare few have enough insight to understand, and these few are precious.

Lyl has finally met such a person, who embraces her without ever touching her, with his honesty. This person gives her hope, and helps her to remember what good is in her life, shifting her focus from all that is bad to that which is good, without him ever telling her that she has to or she will rot inside. There are no warnings about her future, only assurance that it is possible to have a future different than the past.

What a Wild Spirit Brings: Chapter 32

Lyl is in an extremely awkward situation, and on top of that, feels trapped. Honor forcing her to remain in this situation, despite discomfort, makes her overwhelmed with a need to belong to the experience, instead of being the outcast, but she doesn't fit, being the elephant in the room. Lacking purpose, feeling embarrassed, and doubting her own resolve, she loses focus of what brought her here in the first place, as important as that reason was.

Most people in this situation either cower and wait for something to happen, or, more commonly, run, either mentally or physically. Lyl's choice is obvious.

It takes a strong will to face a setting where you hold none of the cards, and everyone not only has a winning deck, but have relationships, leaving you the only defenseless stranger. Someone as distrusting as Lyl would certainly have trouble believing that everyone truly only has her best at heart.

What a Wild Spirit Brings: Chapter 31

When walking in the darkness at my parent's house, I can climb the stairs I have climbed a million times. I do not need to view each squared stair to know where it is. I know each is there, running up the steppes without worry.

There is a power to knowing something is true, whether you can see factual evidence of it or not. That power forces that which you envision to be real, and some might call that faith, or a psychological disorder, or denial, or any other thing, but the truth is that it is a blindness.

This blindness is beautiful, and the source of creativity and ingenuity. There is something seen where nothing is. Innovation and sustenance form from this place of blindness, forcing that which does not exist to do so.

And in this utter blindness to what you have been 'told' exists, by others or by your senses, you finally can see with your inner eye, not only the wistfulness of things, but in confidence of internal sight, their being.

And so it is that one must become blind to see, and must accept as true more which they cannot physically see than that which their eyes proclaim.

What a Wild Spirit Brings: Chapter 30

Lyl has learned that though she may search the planet, there is no such thing as a people with perfect laws. Every nation has good and bad in the political and traditional. Each country forms their own ideals, and if you wish to abide there, sometimes you have to learn to either deal with the small bit you dislike, or else be part of the change of it.

Lyl also has come to terms with the fact that she has no desire to bed a man or a woman in her current condition. She has tried to hide behind a mask of obsessive possessive desire, and misnamed it love. She has accepted that the attraction is there, but that she is a wounded creature, and like all wounded things, tends to lash out and cause hurt rather than pleasure.

What a Wild Spirit Brings: Chapter 29

Twins are so fun, and elderly twins with foreign accents and opposing temperaments are even more so!

Lyl stayed true to herself, and despite reservations, was honest, completely, with people for once. The results were a good meal, a warm bed, and help to her goals.

Boldness and truthfulness go a long way.

What a Wild Spirit Brings: Chapter 28

Lyl has discovered the joys of being in the same country, but meeting people with accents different than your own. It is fascinating what a little culture injection into a youth spawned in isolation does, and how the accents always grab the attention.
Also, she used poor judgment and it cost another their property. Ruining their day made them want to ruin her own.
When she finally wanted to save something instead of stealing, people flocked to help her. Funny how that works...

What a Wild Spirit Brings: Chapter 27

Lyl has made a new friend out of someone she would have normally distrusted- a man.
The way she grew up and the experience with the King had skewed Lyl's opinion of all males. Henri and Munchin have started redeeming men in Lyl's mind. Despite Demiene's actions, Lyl has still had it engrained in her system that men are the overbearing, harsh, cruel, selfish creatures since a toddler. She is finally learning as an adult that things are not so black and white, and that there are good and bad of both genders.
She's also gained a glimpse of what love looks like; real love, which is devoted, more than obsessed.

What a Wild Spirit Brings: Chapter 26

Lyl is starting to realize what legacy means, and how much it can shelter you to gain the protection of it. Lyl doesn't actually deserve to be second in line to a throne, or welcomed into another people than she was born to. She does understand the treasure it is to be her adopted mother's daughter, though, the more she gains from being so.
Her mother lived a life worth living, a life filled with goodness, strength, dignity, and honor. Even though she died on a mountain with none of her friends, Ties still lived until then in such a way that her friends became her children's. She gave of herself for the future to be brighter.
Lyl didn't know Ties when she became adopted. She only knew that she admired the woman and wished she had been her daughter. She is now coming to realize the weight of acceptance from Tindra that she was so readily made daughter of such a woman as Ties.
And if she, the adopted child, gets to benefit from their mother's legacy, she has no right to deny her brother, born of her womb.

What a Wild Spirit Brings: Chapter 25

To lose one's own self is a terrible thing. How true a statement. A person's self image defines them, their actions, their motivation for every choice and path they take in life. The way one view's their own character, body, beliefs, all define every interaction with another, every habit undertaken, and every consequence.
If life is hard, and you feel like everything is against you, try taking a few moments to find yourself. You might be surprised how much it will help you.

My book, my copywrite :)

What a Wild Spirit Brings: Chapter 24

Lyl had to come to terms with letting go; to accept that loving is not why we cling, but desperation. Our own insecurity and lack drives us to hold on to that which has pulled away. We need someone, so they become our obsession, our place of safety, even though the tighter we hold on, the worse our existence truly becomes.
And that is the great deception; that someone else can fulfill the hole within our own beings, and that we only can know true security with them, when in actuality, this is a full delusion, and quite contrary to the truth.
And yet, we cling to other people, voraciously, telling ourselves we are being faithful, that we aren't giving up, that it is because we are in love. Denial, is the real reason most people keep trying in a relationship that has ended, or that should.
Lyl has ended more than one unhealthy relationship here, and unfortunately, none of it because she desired it to be, but more, because her obsessing forced the severing.

What a Wild Spirit Brings: Chapter 23

How terrible it is to think you know someone, know only that they are good and sweet and innocent, and to discover that they are wretched and cruel. How awful, to understand that someone who could have been known always and only as a good person has become a monster.

And the most horrific part of the knowing is that if it weren't for you, they would still be that good person. To know, that your actions alone are at fault for ruining someone's kind nature and destroying their goodness.

What a Wild Spirit Brings: Chapter 22

Lyl  is blind to her own actions, seeing only her own motivations. She is causing people to pull away, even as she thinks she is drawing them near, and in her attempts at 'retaining herself' she flails out recklessly, overly defensive while feigning contrite despair about how others are wronging her.

Lyl is victimizing herself.

She is turning even friends against her, treating them as if they purposefully are seeking her harm and degradation, taking no responsibility for herself. She pursues anything that makes her feel she is right in her wrong actions, and over exaggerates that there are a multitude of attackers in her mind. Lyl has been hurt, and she is smothering everyone with that hurt as if she had right to.

What a Wild Spirit Brings: Chapter 21

Lyl has never been around the upper class, and never has understood being responsible for other people's quality of life, so she has little respect for the act of ruler ship. She does have a very deep personal distrust of people who appear to 'care' about her, though.

Her brother and she talk as though every person in her world is a device to get her closer to her own goals, taking advantage of kindness as a means to an end, rather than feeling grateful to have the kindness shown.

Lyl is still protecting herself, subconsciously, from ever letting another person close again.

Treasure in the Snow: Chapter 5

Alga's explanation is not just to show Sharee no hope of ever leaving, but also to explain to the reader why the people in the castle are the way they are- extreme personalities. Anyone would become somewhat demented after more than a decade of almost absolute isolation as a slave to a witch; or even as that witch herself.

You will find out what a grievous thing Sharee accidently did in this chapter later on, but it is obvious the Mistress of Shadows has not been around small children, in at least decades, but perhaps ever. Her unbridled fury physically has harmed a precocious little girl, but not her spirit, so Sharee will recover alright. Which is not to say that striking a child and causing them harm is ever ok, but more, that it would take more than that to conquer Sharee.

What a Wild Spirit Brings: Chapter 20

Dinner can be very awkward with people you don't know, but even more so when the person you have a crush on is there with their lover. ( And yes, his name is Jerk :D)

I wanted to emphasize the playful interactions between Henri and Lyl within her head, to help the reader understand in a less depressing way than before how much a brother he is to Lyl. They may not be remotely related, but they are family; close knit family. Now they can laugh together and offer mental hugs. Now they can finally talk to each other, and say 'I love you'.

It is just as precious to love as it is to be loved.

My book, my copywrite :)

What a Wild Spirit Brings: Chapter 19

Finally, Lyl's life seems to be getting a little happier!

It breaks my heart, but I know firsthand that not all children get to lead happy playful lives. I have known children who were so accustomed to being abused that kindness was not only foreign, but something they were distrustful of. It took a long time of consistency before they could believe you cared about them.

I used to coach kids in soccer (football if not from the usa). I always assumed every group of kids had at least one who was living a miserable life at home, and tried to love them all and make sure each had fun. No kid ever thought I didn't know their name, or noticed if they were feeling left out, to the utmost of my ability. I hope everyone is mindful of the fact that the kid you see in public is not always the same child at home; that for some, being away from home is the only time they feel safe.

You might not be able to save them, but just by showing them caring, even if you never know about it, they will die with at least a little bit of good memory and have that to cling to in hard times.

Love Children, all of them. Not just because they are future. Not just because they are cute and innocent. Not just your own kids. Love them all. You might end up the only person they remembered ever caring about them in their whole lives.
