Lyl has been confronted about her own self-identity and her values about her self-worth. These are things she has always avoided thinking about, and continues to do so even now. She does not want to know, but the confrontation has been presented, which means  that she will have to deal with it in the future, and that knowledge alone is enough for now.
Lyl also has reconciled with her friends and now everyone is planning and smiling. There is anticipation for the future, rather than dread.
Lyl, in her gladness and excitement, has forgotten the mission, and what fearful unknown trials may lie ahead...

What a Wild Spirit Brings: Chapter 49

New creatures encountered and something as normal as seasickness can chase even the curious mind from excitement. Having a friend who is still angry with her could also have helped her to decide on the mental fleeing as well. It is especially hard to rectify mistakes when you partially agree with the accusations, and yet, also have someone defending your character.
Lyl might have the spirit to fight monstrous creatures and rescue the weak from bad people, but when someone she loves is upset with her, running away is still her first instinct.

What a Wild Spirit Brings: Chapter 48

Lyl is discovering two very important things- that lies are hard to keep up, and trust is a joy.
She has finally realized what having a true friend feels like, and finally understood that physical pleasure can be overshot just by good company in hard times. Someone who accepts you, believes in you, and is always there for you is hard to find and amongst the most wonderful things in the world to have.
Deceit, on the other hand, robs a friendship of closeness, and can even destroy what was a wonderful relationship.
Lyl has lost a friend through her dishonesty and gained one by being open. This has happened before, but this time, the lesson will hopefully, finally, sink in.

What a Wild Spirit Brings: Chapter 47

And so Lyl finally discusses some of her past with a person she has learned to trust; someone she admits gratefully to that she had not tried to force a friendship with, and yet, they are true friends. Lyl was worried that if someone saw her for the whole of what she was, that if she presented herself as being from a people she was ashamed of instead of an adopted people she was mostly proud to be part of, that others would reject her as readily as she had rejected her birthright.


But, a real friend is not so judgmental. A real friend takes the one thing you say out of paragraphs that shines as a resolvable regret, and helps you achieve what you had always felt you couldn't.


Lyl has also finally figured out that a lover and a friend can be very different people, and that just having physical interactions does not mean, no matter how enjoyable those interactions might be, that you will end up living together for the rest of your lives.

And so meeting her teacher outside the Wilder was a sad experience, the shame of her good fortune and secret keeping a burden she had to endure. Despite finding herself with two friends, Lyl is miserable, and not just because of her surroundings. One friend she mistreated in the past, and the other, she has currently misled.
Neither fully can trust her, and can she blame them?
All Lyl has now is a desperation to make it up to both of them, and the floundering that results from her blindness as to how.
