Lyl took a very large risk, and though at first it seemed to be that good fortune was on her side, her daring brought tribulation. She had been willing to suffer to protect her brother, and willing to go, because a friend was with her, but after the exhaustion and the struggle, all there really was left were enemies stilled and a friend near death, with Lyl too tired to do anything useful about either.

Life has moments where the odds are bad no matter which way you choose. Life has times, where protecting one loved one means another is put in harms way. All you can do is try to survive it and find a method to the madness, one which might, just might, bring you and yours out alive. But even if you can, even if luck is with you, there are times in life, no matter how hard you try, no matter how in the right you are, that you and those you love will not come out unscathed.

What a Wild Spirit Brings: Chapter 55

Lyl has discovered that having feelings for someone, and they for you, that the mutual attraction is not the same as love. She can accept this, because it is easy to believe that someone could be attracted, and difficult to imagine someone loving her, at this juncture in her confidence. There was a time, when she could not even imagine as much as mutual attraction.

Her strength of character makes it easy for her to care, and her habit of blaming herself for wrong makes it hard to accept affection. She is genuinely shocked when another shows empathy, let alone closeness, which is why it means so much to her, and gives her such courage. Her friendship with Ginf makes even the horrors of a strange people who might have made the worst blight on the face of the world and who can wield light as a weapon seem only mere people to be confronted.

Lyl, driven by love for her brother and a responsibility to uphold how highly Ginf holds her, steps into the shadows of the Tongues.
